Zambia: Trucks Hits, Kills Woman

A TWENTY-FOUR-YEAR-OLD woman of Lusaka has died after she was hit by an Ashok Leyland truck as she jumped off a moving ox-cart.

The incident occurred on Sunday around 05:30 hours along Twikatane Road near Soft Centre.

Police spokesperson Elizabeth Kanjela said yesterday that Astrida Sakala was hit by the truck after she jumped out of the ox-cart.

"Unfortunately, she was hit by the truck and rushed to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) where she was pronounced dead," she said.

The Ashok Leyland registration number ABT 3486 was being driven by Emmanuel Mwami aged 40 of Garden House.

The driver of the truck is in police custody, while the woman'sbody is in the mortuary awaiting a postmortem.

In Chipata, police are following up on a case of abortion that occurred on Sunday around 13:45 hours.

A doctor at Chipata General Hospital reported that Ticho Banda aged 27 of new Jun Township aborted a pregnancy of about eight weeks.

The victim has been bleeding for the past two days and a stick of about five centimetres was found in her uterus.

She is still admitted under guard to Chipata General Hospital.
