Egypt: State Information Service Denies Its Relation to Independent Sinai Information Center

The State Information Service (SIS) Chairman Dr. Mohammad Badreddin Zayed confirmed that SIS has in Arish, North Sinai an information complex, a Nile center and a press center for the Egyptian and foreign correspondents. He said that there is also an information center in Rafah in which there is a press center affiliated to Arish press center.

SIS Chairman added that an information center in Bir Al-Abd will be inaugurated soon, and that there is the information complex in Mount Sinai, South Sinai which includes information and Nile centers.

This statement came as the SIS Chairman's answers on questions of information representatives on the affiliation of what is called Sinai Independent Information Center to the SIS, which previously announced to be inaugurated by General Sayyed Abdel-Fattah Harhour, North Sinai Governor, on the 9th of January, 2013 and headed by Sheikh Marei Arar.

Ambassador Zayed affirmed that the information and Nile centers, affiliated to the Local Information Sector, perform their information duties and that their personnel work for serving Egypt and the Egyptians. He also confirmed that their work is upgraded according to the nature of the current phase through which Egypt passes.

SIS Chairman said that within the framework of a national project, the Local Information Sector aims at presenting an information developmental message that is keen on making the citizen aware of the local issues at all the economic and political levels.

Ambassador Zayed pointed out that establishing the private and independent information institutions or centers is an acquired right for their owners as long as they are legal. He clarified that this matter comes within the framework of the gains and principles of the 25th of January Revolution that include working for implementing Egypt's intellectual and cultural leadership and the press and information freedom. He referred that these matters are confirmed by the new Egyptian constitution in the second chapter, part two, 45, 46, 47, 48 and 49 articles.

Ambassador Zayed indicated that any cooperation between the mentioned center and the local and foreign information representatives is an internal affair of the center and concerns the information representatives. He also warned against mixing between Sinai independent information center and the SIS information and Nile centers.
