Zambia: Careless Solid Waste Managers to Be Shamed

GOVERNMENT will start publicising names of companies that are generating solid waste without putting in place mechanisms for managing it.

Local Government and Housing Minister Emerine Kabanshi said in Lusaka yesterday that the Government was concerned that manufacturers of plastic paper, glass bottles, opaque beer, mobile phone scratch cards and other solid waste had not invested in solid management.

"My ministry will consider a naming-and-shaming approach by advertising in the mass media organisations that are generating solid waste without putting in place mechanisms to manage it," she said.

Ms Kabanshi said everyone should be responsible for their end products that continued to contaminate the environment.

She was speaking at a national stakeholders' consultative meeting on solid waste management at Government Complex.

The minister said all waste producers were required to use solid waste management systems established by the council in their areas of jurisdiction.
