GroundUp speaks to Cape Town All Stars 23 year old attacking midfielder Bongolwethu Ncusana about how he started playing football and what his aspirations are.
How did you get involved in soccer?
When I was young my friends and I used to play street games at school during lunch. One of the teachers, who was involved in a soccer team, saw me playing and invited me to an U12 Score Tournament that was sponsored by Ajax Cape Town. There I was selected by Ajax and that's how I got involved in soccer.
What teams have you played for?
I've played for Cape Town All Stars FC (Vodacom), Mighty Mega Force (Vodacom), Ajax Cape Town (Development) and Fire Fighters (Amateur)
What is your background?
I'm from the streets and corners of Khayelitsha.
Who is your Role Model?
My role model is Barcelona's Cesc Fàbregas.
GroundUp: What do you think of The Afcon Cup so far?
It is interesting. The teams are battling up and I think it's improving. The goals that are being scored in this years tournament are top class goals, so yeah, there is a lot of improvement from all the teams.
What are your plans for the future?
Ncusana: I would like to play for a team in Europe and I believe if I work hard and perform on the field it can be possible. Many South African players are playing for or have played for teams in Europe. That is what motivates me for my future.
What is your message to the youth?
Complete school, work hard, have faith and believe in yourself.
