Two philanthropists namely Gunter and Elfi from Dauchingen village in Germany recently donated cash and basic foodstuff to boost the school feeding programmes in three schools in the West Coast Region.
The three nursery schools - Jakoi, Katakarr and Bulanjorr all in Foni Bintang Karannai each received 20 bags of rice, 10 Gallons of oil, five bags of onion and a cheque amounting to D8, 000.
Speaking at the various presentation ceremonies, the manager of Bintang Bolong Lodge, Solo Drammeh, who is also the man behind the assistance, described the benefactors as "true friends" of The Gambia, and commended them for their move. He said the food aid would go a long way in complementing government's school feeding programme. Drammeh disclosed that the items including the cash were valued at over D112, 000.
"As a good citizen of this country, I feel happy to participate in the development process of the country through supporting the education sector," he remarked.
He explained that the food items are meant for the feeding of the children, whilst the cash is earmarked for the tuition fees of the pupils.
"The objective of the donors is to ensure that the communities of the area enjoy quality education," Drammeh further remarked, while urging the students to make best use of the books so as to excel in their academic pursuits.
For her part, the head teacher of Jakoi Nursery School, Mary Mendy, hailed the donors for the intervention, and assured them that the donated items will be put into good use.
