Nigeria: Don't Enact Law On Religious Extremism, National Assembly Urged

Kaduna — The Terrorism Prevention Act, 2011 should be repealed and the National Assembly should abandon the idea of enacting a law on religious extremism, Barrister Aliyu Umaru has said.

In a-24 page memorandum to the National Assembly, he said there are enough laws to take care of security and other challenges facing the country. He urged the National Assembly to ensure that the Nigeria police force is adequately funded and properly organised for its men to discharge their constitutional responsibilities of maintaining law and order.

"The National Assembly should ensure that the Joint Task Force (JTF) and military roadblock commands are disbanded. Their responsibilities should be transferred to the Nigeria police and other civil defence organisations," he said.

According to him, federal law makers should ensure that all members of the Armed Forces return to their military command posts.

"In the process, Nigeria should not allow itself to be misled into treating a purely internal civil war issue like the one in Mali as war against terrorism. Nigeria should call for an emergency meeting of heads of state of African Union for the purpose of laying a solid foundation of ending all armed conflicts bedevilling African countries within the shortest possible time. Nigeria should call for the immediate withdrawal of all non-African armed forces from African countries; particularly the massive French military force deployed to Mali with full backing of the United States of America", he said.
