Liberia: Demolition Spree Leaves Citizens Internally Displaced - As Lawmaker Calls for Calm

Hundreds of poor Liberians have been left homeless and poorer as the Government of Liberia, through the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC), continues its demolition exercise throughout Monrovia, the give the city a face lift as international guests storm Liberia for the High Level Panel discussion on the post-2015 millennium development goals.

The high level meeting, co-Chaired by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and other world leaders is intended to discuss means by which the world, especially least developed countries like Liberia, can successfully conquer poverty and promote human dignity after 2015.

But just ahead of the meeting, the MCC has used yellow machines to break down homes in Sinkor and other places on ground that the structures were not fit to be there--where they have been for decades--without giving them an alternative place to be until they find new places to live.
