Tanzania: National Boxing Championship Gets Underway

MMJKT club dominated the opening of National Boxing championship, which started on Wednesday at the National Indoor Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

Victor Njarti of MMJKT was too strong for Sunday Elius of Ngome in a light weight battle, as match referee had to stop the contest to rescue the latter in the second round. Another MMJKT boxer Said Hofu (lightweight) went through into the next stage without throwing a jab as his opponent--- Fadhili Hassan (Maili Moja Club) failed to show up.

Earlier, Athuman Shaaban (Mgulani Club) outpunched Samuel Maganga of Maili Moja Club by 5-0 points in a bantam weight scramble, while Wambura Amir of Mgulani JKT was awarded a walk over after his opponent Selemani Mohammed of Kilimahewa Club failed to honour his lightweight fight.

In another lightweight battle, Jacob Augustino of Mbweni JKT was also awarded a walk over, following a failure by his opponent --Hussein Hamis (Mbagala Kuu) to show up for the fight.

The Boxing Federation of Tanzania (BFT) Secretary General, Makore Mashaga said the championship is being held at a zero budget. "We only manage to stage the event courtesy of little support we get from Lotus Valley Company," he said.
