United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman discussed Somalia's current situation and plans for reconstruction with top Somali leaders in Mogadishu on Wednesday (January 30th), Somalia's RBC Radio reported.
Feltman met with Somali Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon, Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Osman Jawari and the ministers of justice, defence and the interior. He expressed the United Nations' commitment to support the Somali government in its efforts to rebuild the country and bring back stability, and urged the administration to increase efforts to promote and protect human rights, particularly by condemning sexual violence against women.
Feltman also called on the government to pursue dialogue and reconciliation with Puntland and Somaliland regional administrations.
"I was inspired and encouraged by what I heard today from the Somali authorities," Feltman said. "Somalia is beginning to undergo a profound transformation. The United Nations will continue to assist however possible."
