Nigeria Cargo Exports Hit N129.9 Billion in 2012

Not less than N129.9 billion worth of assorted cargo items were exported out of Nigeria in 2012, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has revealed.

The exported cargoes include palm kernel cake, cocoa beans and wheat bran pallets, cashew nuts, sesame seeds, ginger, hibiscus flower, gum Arabic, processed rubber, shrimps, and lead ingot.

Others are 4, 625,837 square feet of processed leather, 74,547 cases of Dettol, maggi crayfish, 29,062 cartons of biscuits, 97,100 bags of assorted bathroom slippers, and 1,655,320 litres of ethyl alcohol.

NCS, Customs Area Controller (CAC), Apapa Area 1 Command, Comptroller, Mohammed Umar who disclosed this in Lagos said that 116, 525 metric tonnes of some of the commodities valued at N129.9 billion were exported through the Lagos Port Complex (LPC), Apapa in 2012.

He explained that the commodities were exported between January and December.

The CAC disclosed that the total revenue collected by the command at the port was N283.9 billion, adding that the command's post clearance audit unit had attracted no fewer than 119 companies.

"A monthly average of 1,177 containers left the ports under the scheme. A total of 14,128 containers were exited through the post clearance audit scheme", he added.

The Customs Chief also revealed that the command no fewer than 20 containers of contraband laden with batteries, used engines, deodorants, car parts, textiles, and electronics were seized by men and officers of the command in 2012.
