Egypt: Europe Wants to See a Stable Egypt - - Says Ashton

EU High Representative Catherine Ashton stressed on Thursday 31/01/2013 that Europe wants to see a stable Egypt and that it supports the moves towards democracy.

"We are quite concerned about events taking place in Egypt. We are in constant touch through our delegation in Cairo with President Mohamed Morsy, his advisor Essam el-Haddad and some of the opposition groups to try and support the moves to democracy," she told reporters ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers.

"It is very important for us that Egypt is stable, that the economic issues are addressed and that we see the political moves forward. That is really the fundamental aspect of what the European Union wants to see happen," said the EU foreign policy chief.

Ashton said that yesterday's meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council will look at the situation in Egypt and Syria.
