Kenya: Police Impound Sh1.8 Million Bhang Haul in Kuria

Police in Kuria West have impounded a bhang haul worth about Sh1.8 million in street value.

The impounding of the 189kg haul comes barely a week after security officers in the region netted another 633kg bhang haul worth Sh6.3 million at Isebania border point as the drug being smuggled from Tanzania.

"We had intelligence (reports) that the bhang was to be smuggled from Tanzania on bicycles before it was to be packed in a white Toyota corolla saloon car at Mabera area," area police chief Paul Kiogora said.

Police also detained the drug, the car and three bicycles that were ferrying the cargo across the border.

"The smugglers got wind of the police dragnet and escaped. The vehicle, the drug and bicycles have been detained at Isebania Police Station," he said.

Kiogora said there are three vehicles that have been impounded while trafficking in bhang this year. "Bhang is readily cultivated in Tanzania's Mara region which also offers cheap market," he said.

On Monday last week, Kenya police acting on a tip off by by their Tanzanian counterparts, netted a Sh6.33 million bhang haul as it was being ferried through Isebania in a car.

"We have intensified road blocks and check points to stamp out the vice and beat smugglers at their own game," Kiogora said.
