Uganda: Court to Rule On Desh's Bail Application

High Court Judge Lameck Mukasa, will tomorrow decide whether to grant bail to city businessman Andrew Kananura Kagonyera alias Desh.

Kananura, who faces murder charges in relation to the death of his former employee Badru Kateregga, told court on Friday that he is too sick to stay in Luzira for the period of the trial. To back his bail application, his lawyer Goeffrey Kandeebe presented two medical reports from Murchison Bay hospital and another from London, indicating that Kananura suffers from diabetes, which can not be treated at Luzira.

However, the prosecution led by Fred Kakooza dismissed this, arguing that the medical facility at Mulago is competent to treat diabetes. Kananura presented three sureties, led by Makerere University Chancellor Prof Mondo Kangonyera, his uncle.

Kakooza added that Kananura holds British citizenship and could easily jump bail.
