Uganda: The Geezer - When 'Arrival Syndrome' Hits Her

Medius was the quintessential young belle, just done with university education and starting out life as an independent adult.

As beautiful and quite naïve as they come, she, like many of her friends leaving campus, had something of a boyfriend up her sleeve. They were the couple to admire and talk about. Despite humble means, they stuck together amid all forms of temptations and even when they fought, they walked out hand in hand.

He had been out of campus a year earlier and had been lucky to land a job in one of those banks in town as you guessed -a teller. Life was good. To Medius, he was more than just a boyfriend; he was a guardian. Occasionally topping up on fees, meeting a fraction of the hostel fees and treating her to chips and chicken every so often, not to mention airtime and other things he met using mobile money.

In turn, Medius, loved her beau to the T and it showed from how she treated him and carried herself in his presence.

He had been very instrumental in Medius' job hunting spree, providing more than a mere token of transport to actual drafting of applications and many times, delivering them to potential employers. Medius, did not know many people in 'good' places and so, he was her ace referee on all her applications.

As luck would have it, Medius soon landed a job, not a mere job, but a lucrative one in one of the three oil prospecting companies. You want a hint? Well, let's say, the Chinese one. She was appointed administrator for one of the many departments. The excitement among the couple was indescribable. The terms of the job were more than Medius had ever dreamt of - a seven figure salary mark. She had never seen a million bucks in one bundle, not even as tuition!

Then there was a mobile phone complete with airtime she never imagined could fit in one phone, medical insurance, a laptop and much more, not to mention having to work in a swanky environment. She had dived right into the deep end of the corporate class and swam therein with gusto and excitement that can only be imagined of a city novice from a humble upcountry home.

To the boyfriend, he felt the yoke had finally been removed from his shoulders. At least, he would have a financial partner, not a parasite, okay dependant. He imagined them planning for their pay together as would of the ideal couple; buying some holdings jointly and eventually walking down the aisle to cement their four-year romance that had begun in high school. His imaginations were somewhat too ambitious.

What hit him was his least of worries. He never imagined that Medius was like most babes who get awed by the 'arrival syndrome'. This is a syndrome where after hitting fame and fortune, many people get inclined to shed away every reminder of their previous life to embrace the new exciting life without historical baggage. They will move house, discard many of their possessions like cars and clothes for new ones and even shed off friends, yes, friends!

Medius, started acting weird -geezer, I am sure you know all too well what this is from a wench. Boyfriend's concerns were treated as insecurity and the once loving and submissive kyana became an arrogant braggart turning her hitherto mentor and lover into a door rug of sorts or even worse.

She had arrived and discarding historical baggage; her boyfriend bambi was not lucky to get spared! Geezer, does this story sound familiar? Women, eh!
