Somali forces, backed by a Djiboutian contingent of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), clashed with al-Shabaab militants in Beledweyne on Friday (February 1st), UN-funded Radio Bar-Kulan reported.
The fighting broke out when al-Shabaab militants stormed the Somali and AMISOM military base in the Howlwadag neighbourhood early in the morning. Somali officials said allied forces killed at least 12 militants, including top al-Shabaab commanders, adding that they will release their names soon.
This is the first clash between AMISOM and al-Shabaab in Beledweyne since Djiboutian forces replaced Ethiopian troops.
