About 100 police officers will be deployed to Marka to assess the security situation in the town beginning on Friday (February 1st), Somali Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon announced Thursday.
Shirdon met with local elders, informing them that his office will fund the police deployment until the government establishes a budget for the region, UN-funded Radio Bar-Kulan reported.
This is Shirdon's first visit to the town since he was appointed prime minister last October.
Marka has Somalia's third largest port and was liberated from al-Shabaab in August 2012.
