Kenya: Woman, 32, Enters Kisumu East Seat Race

IRENE Adhiambo Onunga was yesterday cleared to vie for the Kisumu East constituency parliamentary seat on a United Republican Party ticket.

Onunga, 32, was cleared on Thursday by the returning officer Jacqueline Osiemo.

Onunga called for issue-based campaigns and warned against 'six piece' voting in the March 4 election. "Six piece voting will lead to people voting for candidates who are not credible. People saw how some parties conducted the primaries," she said.

He asked her rivals to conduct peaceful campaigns. "We want issue-based campaigns because we will all remain Kenyans after elections," she said.

She urged women to contest for political seats. "We should not be afraid to face men. Very few women have offered themselves for election in this part of the country," she said.
