Uganda: Baby Receives Successful Surgery , Thanks to New Vision Readers

The joy of a mother is to see her child healthy and happy. That is how Juliet Namutebi, a 24-year-old single mother who lives in Bweyogerere, Wakiso district feels.

Her one-year-old daughter, Grace Baiga, had a successful tonsillitis operation at Mulago Hospital after New Vision published an article appealing for financial help from well- wishers. Baiga needed sh1.2m for the surgery.

Susan Chandiru, Namutebi's friend, who assisted her in soliciting for the money said they received a total of sh2.2m from people within Uganda and abroad.

"We are very grateful for the overwhelming support given to Namutebi to save her baby. We received money from people within Uganda and abroad, especially in the US, South Africa and Qatar. Others have called us to say they are praying for the baby," she said.

Chandiru said the surgery was done at Mulago Hospital free of charge. She said Baiga now sleeps soundly unlike the past when she used to cry all the time.

Namutebi thanked New Vision for publishing the article.

"Thanks to New Vision that published the story and all those who responded, especially Madam Christine, the first person to send us money - sh1.2m a day after," she added.
