West Africa: Media in Mali Divided By Conflict

press release

In the wake of the crisis in Mali, a delegation from the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), the Denmark-based International Media Support (IMS) and Dakar-based Panos Institute West Africa (PIWA), embarked on a Media Assessment mission to Mali to assess the impact of the crisis on the media and freedom of expression in the country.

The mission which was from October 13 -19, 2012, identified the negative impact the crisis has had on the media and access to information in Mali and came up with a number of recommendations and strategies on how the media can be supported to contribute to peacebuilding and democratisation processes in the troubled West African country.

The report from the mission presents an overview of the conflict in Mali, details out the findings and makes some recommendations for media development in the country.
