Nigeria: UK Ready to Send Troops to Mali

The British Chief of Defence Staff General Sir David Richard yesterday said troops would be sent to Mali to train African forces fighting the rebels there.

Gen Richard met with Nigeria's defence chiefs led by Admiral Ola Sa'ad Ibrahim (chief of defence staff) in Abuja. He said Britain will deploy a brigade to Mali not for combat operations but "to train the African forces." He said the situation in Mali must be resolved through cooperation. "There are many challenges in Mali, it is vital we resolve these issues.

We are 150 per cent with you but we have to be transparent. Britain is very committed about the situation and we want frank discussion." Admiral Ibrahim said he held a closed door meeting with his British counterpart on how to "manage the crisis in Mali. We discussed on logistics and intelligence."
