Kenya Navy's Jonah Orurikwe clocked 42:27:92 minutes to win senior men's 12km race during Coast Provincial cross country championship in Ukunda, Kwale County over the weekend. Orurikwe defied all odds including the scorching sun and rough terrain to clinch the title.
Paul Kipchumba of Kilifi came second in 43:25:83 while Kwale's Simon Kong'o was third in 43:34:28. Hungus Wanjugha of Taita Taveta finished fourth in 43:46:78. In the senior women's 8km race, Felister Mweni emerged top in 34:57:77. Lucrencia Nyambu (Kwale) came second in 36:14:29 while Mary Mwangemi of Taita Taveta finished third in 36:24:89.
In the Junior men's 8km race, Lamech Mwakio of Taita Taveta emerged top after clocking 27:30:38. He was followed by Bahati Kitsao of Kilifi in 29:46:18 and Mombasa's Nzolo Mutuku (30:00:80).
Rozaa Wanjala of Taita Taveta won the Junior women 6km race in 25:43:74 and was followed by Evelyne Chombo (Taita Taveta) in 26:47:80 and Rukia Kombe (Kilifi) in 27:50:84.
The race which attracted 105 athletes was used to select a team to represent the coast province at the national cross country championships later this month. Coast AK chairman Dimmy Kisalu termed the race successful.
