Nigeria: FG Tasked On Medical Imaging Policy

A call has gone to Federal government and its agencies to invest more realistically in the practice of medical imaging. Making the call in Lagos at the official unveiling of Everything Radiography International - a 21st century lifestyle magazine with a focus on radiography, the Course Coordinator, B.Sc Radiography Programme, College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Mr. L.C, Abonyi, said Nigeria should brace up for the ever emerging challenges of the practice of medical imaging so as to achieve quality service for the patient in treatment outcomes.

"Nigeria remains under-explored and under-exploited as far as medical imaging practice is concerned. Tertiary hospitals are not yet equipped by current international standard, of providing at least a CT scan machine and an MRI unit.

"The common and cardinal objective should be to ensure high quality service in order to promote healthy living by the populace and should equally reflect in the policies of government whose responsibility it is, to provide the enabling environment," Abonyi explained.

The medical imaging practice ought to enjoy protection from the Federal Ministry of Health against the onslaught from Ministry of Finance via Customs services. This should be the operational perspective of all the agencies of government. Any policy that discourages quality growth of medical imaging practice or escalates the cost of services out of the reach of an average Nigerian, is a disservice to the nation."

Consultant radiographer and Publisher/CEO, ER International magazine, David Omiyi, said the magazine is targeted to serve as a platform for the exposition, promotion and advancement of the ever-changing trends in medical imaging.

"A decade ago, we had less than 1,000 certified and licensed radiographers in Nigeria; few training institutions; and a handful of imaging centres with obsolete equipment. With what we have on ground today, it is incontestable that radiography is playing an increasingly indispensable role in our healthcare system

Despite all the growth in this sector of our health care system, lack of proper information dissemination has left questions in the heart of stake holders, particularly we radiographers.

"In a bid to answer these and other questions; the ER International magazine was conceived to serve as a news hub for effective dissemination of information in radiography," he remarked.
