AN indigenous pharmaceutical manufacturing company,Bradford Pharmaceutical Limited, has called for local production of over-the-counter, OTC, drugs, so as to minimise the influx of fake and counterfeit medicines and contribute to availability of safe and effective medicines in the country.
The Chairman, Bradford Pharmaceuticals Limited, Hon. Idowu Obasa, who stressed the need for Nigerians to invest in the pharmaceutical manufacturing, said it would be part of efforts to contribute to local industrialisation with the collateral benefit of creating jobs for the deep pool of unemployed youths.
Obasa spoke during the official presentation of three new locally made OTCs and one ethical drug - Bradmol syrup, a novelty formulation free of propylene glycol, glycerin and analogues; Bradcuff expectorant, Bradferex Blood Tonic and Bradferon.
Bradcuff expectorant is a cough syrup administered in the mitigation and treatment of cough and nasal congestion as well as Bradferon blood tonic, which provides iron, folic acid and vitamin B complex. Bradferex also provides folic acid and vitamin B12 and can be taken by children and adults.
Obi added that with the introduction of Bradmol paracetamol, poisoning cases arising from the use of propylene glycol as solvent in manufacturing syrups will be reduced.
Presenting the drugs, Bradford Superintendent Pharmacist, Anthony Obi said the drugs, which are 100 per cent Nigerian-sourced, have a unique and novel formulation because they do not contain propylene glycol, glycerine and analogues.
In an endorsement, President, Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, PSN, Pharmacist Olumide Akintayo stressed the need for local pharmaceutical manufacturers to build quality in their products with a view to boosting the country's drug industry and reducing influx of fake drugs through importation. "There is need for local manufacturers to look inward and build capacity aimed at producing over the counter drugs locally."
