Zambia: Mealie Meal Shortage Hits Solwezi

Mealie meal shortage has hit Solwezi in Zambia's North Western Province for the second time in six months.

Major outlets like Shoprite, National Milling Company and Antelope Milling do not have the commodity.

A Solwezi resident said Antelope Milling is currently closed for operations.

According to the resident, a 10kg bag of the commodity, which is Zambia's staple food, is selling at K35, 000 (KR 35 rebased) on the black market while a 25 kg bag will fetch more than double that price.

The resident has appealed to authorities to ensure that the commodity is available on the market to avert starvation in the province.

"We are told the maize is there but we can't access mealie meal, we don't know what is happening," the resident said.

Late last year, prices of mealie meal skyrocketed tripling from around K35, 000 for a 25 bag of the commodity to about K100, 000 in some parts of the country.

President Michael Sata was forced to call a meeting with millers to reduce the price to not more than K50, 000 per 25 kg bag.
