Nigeria: Boosting Health Sector Through Local Patronage

interview

Many have argued that local patronage of hospital by government officials will boost the morale of these hospitals and also improve the state of the facilities there. In this interview with Alhaji Yahaya Karaku, a special adviser to the Kogi State governor, he says his governor has shown exemplary actions, by patronizing a local facility after his accident. Excerpts.

What do you think made the governor decide to seek treatment in Nigeria, unlike some of his counterparts?

Governor Idris Wada is a patriotic citizen of this country with absolute faith and believes in the potentials that abound in every part of our nation. In fact I learnt that he personally insisted on being treated within the country and he is recovering well.

When we encourage personalities like the governors to patronize our health facilities it will help to improve them. Unlike other elites that travel abroad for medical treatment at the least opportunity, Governor Wada explored the use of medical facilities available in the country even when he could have travelled abroad. This is an example worthy of emulation by government office holders who are controlling state resources on behalf of the people.

Governor Wada's administration is celebrating 365 days in office. What can you say about his leadership style and administration's achievement?

Insha' Allah, the administration of Governor Wada is celebrating one year of relentless service to the good people of Kogi state this month. As a person that is working closely with this administration, I have great respect and admiration for the person of the governor as a man that has the interest of the masses as heart.

His leadership style is people centered as he has shown publicly by conserving the state resources and getting treatment locally even in the face of death.

Governor Wada is an action governor and his programmes are people centred aimed at alleviating and ameliorating the suffering of the masses.

He has done so much that words will fail me to tell you all but notable achievements within this short time including the renovation of secondary schools in the state with the notion of raising the standard of education.

In addition to this, he has empowered women through small and medium scale businesses. He has also provided the state medical centres with the modern health facilities and made available employment opportunities to reduce the level of unemployment in the state.

Tell me your impression of governance in Kogi state.

I am using this opportunity to thank the Almighty God for spearing the life of our able and amiable governor. The accident that claimed his orderly's life was fatal but Allah speared his life to continue the good work he is currently doing in the state.

Your final message to the people of Kogi state

My message to the ever supportive people of Kogi state is to keep believing and supporting the actions of the Governor who despite the fatal accident has been discharging his duties to the state and is working tirelessly to transform the state to be among the leading job creation states, provision of basic amenities and empowering the people.
