Zimbabwe: Women Hail Draft Constitution

WOMEN organisations have hailed the draft Constitution for affording them an opportunity to have equal representation with their male counterparts in all Government institutions on a 50-50 percent basis.

Women's Parliamentary Caucus chairperson Cde Beatrice Nyamupinga said they were happy with the draft's provisions.

"We are very happy with the draft constitution. As women of Zimbabwe we have achieved a lot," she said.

"We wouldn't have done better than we have done now considering the current constitution did not consider women at all.

"In this draft I think we have achieved 90-95 percent. We couldn't have achieved 100 percent at once but can now proceed with the agenda in Parliament."

The Zanu-PF Goromonzi West legislator said the proportional representation would result in more female legislators, guaranteeing gender equality.
