Kenya: 51 Arrested for Avoiding School

Operation Rudi Shule in Malindi has again arrested 51 children who have abandoned school. About 81 pupils in the area have not gone back to school for first term.

Speaking to journalists in Malindi, Shela assistant chief Nichodemus Mwayele said the operation will continue untill all the children are back to school.

"These children are now found in town and beaches. They do not belong there but to be in school," he said. The chief said the big challenge they face is lack of cooperation from parents. He said most parents do not value the education of their children.

"If parents were cooperating with us then all these children will be in school. Unfortunately many parents are ignorant of the importance of education. It very unfortunate not to encourage your child not to go to school despite of free primary education," he said. He encouraged the parents to cooperate with them.

"We are doing this for the good of these children. If parents would have known this, then they will not estate to do so. Let them know that education is paramount," he said.
