Zambia: CAF Fines Renard U.S.$10 000

THE Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reprimanded Chipolopolo coach Herve Renard, over his comments that the soccer motherbody did not want Zambia to play at the Confederations Cup.

It is believed that CAF has slapped a $10,000 (about KR 52,000) fine on Renard over comments made following Zambia's elimination from the AFCON where he said that CAF did not want his team to play in the Confederations Cup.

Renard, during a Press conference on January 29 at Mbombela Stadium after Zambia was knocked out of the AFCON finals, said CAF did not want the Chipolopolo to play in the Confederations Cup set for Brazil because the team was not 'sexy' enough.

He said this in response to a question from journalists, who wanted to find his views on CAF not according the 2012 winners the chance to play in the Confederations Cup or offer Zambia a play-off with the 2013 winners to see who represents the continent at the competition.

"I can give you an honest answer, CAF is happy that Zambia will not be playing at the Confederations Cup. I do not know but maybe Zambia is not sexy enough. That is the truth," Renard.

The Frenchman said it was sad that CAF refused to accord the 2012 champions the opportunity to represent the continent at the Confederations Cup saying: "It would have been fairer if the 2012 and 2013 champions had gone on to represent the continent but I guess it never crossed their minds".

CAF reprimanded Renard by slapping him with a fine but suspended for a year meaning that the 2012 Africa Coach-of-the-year does not need to commit a similar offence within a year or risks paying the amount.

A source, familiar to the matter, said CAF had slapped a fine but suspended for a year and that Renard would need to pay the fine should he commit a similar offence within the stipulated period.

But Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) general secretary George Kasengele in an interview yesterday could neither confirm nor deny the development but said his office would issue a comprehensive statement once CAF had officially made communication.
