Uganda: I Will Wait for My Beloved - Fashion Designer

Jackie Kasujja is a fashion designer and co-owner of SEMA fashion and design house in Kabalagala. She spoke to Vicky Wandawa about her love life.

SEMA of all names?

Yes, it is a Swahili word meaning say. When clients seek our professional services, anything they say can be made, hence the name SEMA. We deal in unique design clothes, bags, caps, earrings, necklaces and many others.

You sound busy, do you have time for relationships?

Yes, with Brian. That's the only name I am giving you. Actually, we co-own the fashion house.

How long have you been dating?

Three years.

In a relationship and working together all day, don't you get inconvenienced?

Previously, though we both were into fashion and design, we worked separately and only merged three years ago, because we have different skills and the combination is superb. There is a lot of work for us to do, we have over 500 clients and never have time to let the relationship ruin our working relationship. When at work, we make sure it is about work.

What attracted him to you?

My character and, most certainly, my beauty.

What is annoying about him?

He is talkative. Sometimes he talks about everything and yet there are certain things I would rather keep under and wraps and private, but he goes on and on. It pisses me off.

What do you like about him?

His sense of humour and he is really friendly.

And the ring on your finger?

It is a purity ring inscribed, "I will wait for my beloved."

Pre-marital sex is a no go area. The church took us through intense lessons on waiting. You just do not get this ring; you have to believe in purity and accept to go through the lessons.

How is the wait going?

Just fine, no problem, considering that I do not live with him.

You have kissed at least?

Playing with fire, don't you think so?

It was just a peck when I made 21.

Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?

I will be married, with children and SEMA will be much bigger than it is today, hopefully with a fashion school.

What advice do you have for your age mates regarding relationships?

Only get into a relationship because you feel it's the right time, not because your parents are wondering why you are not, or because all your fiends are dating.

What are your 2013 resolutions?

SEMA fashion house will expand, move into bigger premises and have a fashion show, save a baby, during which we will showcase clothes and inspire young people about making good use of their skills and talents in this competitive world, like we have. I will also commit to my relationship more.
