Ethiopia: UK Deputy PM to Visit High School in Addis

United Kingdom Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, who has also been Leader of the Liberal Democrats since 2007, is to arrive in Addis Abeba on February 14, in time to launch a women's empowerment program at Kokeb Tsebah, a local preparatory high school in the city.

The Women Support Program to be launched on February 15 is supported by the Department for International Development (DfID), with the aim of encouraging females in the Afar and Borena Zones to go to school.

With the United Kingdom assuming the Presidency of the G8 this year, the Deputy PM will be looking to promote relations with the African Union during his first visit to Ethiopia. Accompanying him will be the Minister for Africa, Mark Simmonds, who will also be discussing the bilateral and commercial relationship between the UK and Ethiopia.

Kokeb Tsebah, established in November 1924, was one of the first schools to be opened before the Italian invasion in 1935.
