Ghana: Central Regional Govt Hospital Needs 700 Nurses

Cape Coast — The Medical Director in charge of the Central Regional Hospital, Dr. Daniel Asare has revealed that the hospital needs over 700 nurses to improve upon the quality of health services it renders to the public.

He lamented that the regional hospital, which is in a region (Central Region) that has over the years produced nurses who have been posted to the various parts of the country, has less than 120 nurses, which is woefully inadequate.

Dr. Asare said the Central Regional Hospital, which was the first of series of ultra-modern Regional Hospitals established by the Ministry of health and started full operations in August 1998 is under staff and that the services of midwives, accountants, administrators, engineers and medical officers are urgently needed.

In an interview with The Chronicle, Dr. Asare also noted that since the Hospital, which was adjudged the best Regional Hospital in the year 2003, would soon be upgraded into Teaching Hospital, there was the need to meet its manpower requirement.

He regretted that encroachment of hospital lands, inadequate water supply for both staff and patients, frequent power surging and accommodation for the newly recruited staff has been a major challenge and, therefore, appealed to the government and other philanthropists to come to their aid, adding that one has to pay a huge amount for private accommodation which is very disincentive.

Reviewing the performance of the Hospital in 2012, Dr. Asare said though there has been a major improvement of the quality of services, the quantum of change was not what was expected and would soon meet the various departments to receive their complaints and challenges and see how best to address them to help accelerate the progress of the hospital.

On his plans for 2013, he said he would do extra work to ensure that the hospital has been totally upgraded to a teaching one as well as producing the first batch of medical doctors, post them to other districts and communities to address numerous human resource challenges at the various hospitals in the country.
