Nigeria: Court Grants Lawan, Emenalo Bail

Justice Mudashiru Oniyangi of Abuja High Court Friday granted the former Chairman of the House of Representatives Ad hoc committee on Fuel Subsidy Probe and the Secretary, Honorable Farouk Lawan and Mr. Boniface Emenalo respectively bail in the sum of N10 million each with two sureties each in like sum.

The accused persons are also expected to drop their travelling documents with the registrar of the court pending the conclusion of their trial.

The trial judge noted that though the offences for which the suspects were charged were not ordinarily bailable going by Section 341(2) of the Criminal Procedure Code which provided that any offence which had three years and above as punishment is ordinarily not bailable.

He however chose to admit them to bail because the prosecution did not file any counter affidavit to controvert the facts deposed to by the them.
