Kenya: Nakuru IDP Camp Shut Down After Resettlement

The government has officially closed Nawamu IDP camp in Nakuru after resettling all IDPs.

The 200 families who were camping in the area were yesterday resettled in Gatundia area of Laikipia county while others were resettled in Ol Kalou, Nyandarua county.

Ministry of special programs coordinator in charge of Central region Fred Mutsami reiterated the Government's commitment to resettle all other remaining IDPs before the next general elections.

"We want to assure all other post election victims that we are committed to give them land before elections time. We do not want them to suffer any more at the camps," he said.

He noted that the Government will embark on building houses and providing them with enough food for them to start their new lives.

Mutsami said the exercise has taken too long due to the beurocracy involved but the government is committed to build them new houses and provide food.

The victims pleaded with the Government to provide them with farm inputs and at the same time hasten the building of houses ahead of the rainy season.

"We want to start new lives and start farming as we used to do before we were evicted. We urge the government to provide us with fertilizer and planting materials as we are ready to farm," said Lucy Nyokabi.
