Kenya: Newlywed Woman Held Over Her Kidnap Plot

A newlywed woman is in police custody for faking her kidnap to raise money to pay a debt she owes a former boyfriend. Joyce Watamu will be taken to court to answer charges of attempting to con her husband and his family members.

Police in Kitengela said Watamu went into hiding early this week and called her family claiming she had been kidnapped. She said the alleged kidnappers were demanding Sh400,000.

Joyce confessed to the police that before her wedding last December she had borrowed Sh400,000 from her former boyfriend. Former boyfriend wanted his money and she came up with the kidnap plan to raise it.
