One of the reasons why songwriting has not earned a place in Nigerian music industry is that most songs that have made sensational hits have no lyrics. Attention has shifted to making beats and at a certain point in the music scene, the ragga music genre became a national music symbol and a lot of music videos ascended to fame on its high demand. Still, there are few fans and artistes who show keen interest in the words of a song. The new single from the sonorous singer-songwriter, Olaolu Olugbemiro Tokunbo Akigbogun otherwise known as GT Da Guitarman titled "Ejika" may have passed the lyrics test.
To begin with, the R'n'B song is nothing quite like GT's previous songs. It is essentially a love song, well timed on its release during Valentine period. However, the message in the 3mins 51secs song stretches beyond romantic love. It is an expression of gratitude for loyalty. The Yoruba word "Ejika" literally translates Shoulder. In English language, a shoulder beyond its meaning in physical anatomy suggests "support" or "loyalty". Speaking with THISDAY, the love lyricist explained the background to the lyrics and how it was inspired.
"The song Ejika was born out of the need to write a song that appreciates those who will always be there no matter what and the phrase 'Iwo lejika ti o ma je aso o bolorun mi' is a Yoruba idiom that perfectly depicts that. Your Ejika(shoulder) can be God, your parents, friends, fans and spouse. This is just a thank you song to my very own Ejika."
Known for his bilingual lyrical structure, GT's aim is to break language barrier in rendition of songs to get a wider appeal. He goes further to tell the meaning of the chorus rendered in Yoruba.
"Iwo lejika ti o ma je aso obo lorun mi means 'You are the shoulder that didn't let my shirt to fall off my neck'. Ejika is actually my second official single off my yet-to-be-titled sophomore album, which will be released under my label, Ember Entertainments. The single, 'Arise Africa' was released online last year and it got very good responses.
"I shot the video for Ejika on Sunday, Feb 3, 2013 and is set to drop next week. The video was directed by Ember entertainments official video director-12 Digits Pictures. 'Ejika' was produced by DMM Oluremi Iyilade at Digital Magix Music in Dolphin Estate. The remix which is a club version soon to be released features veteran Rapper Ruggedman. It was produced by Ksolo at KIM studio, Agege."
In many ways, the style and talent of GT Da Guitarman mirror Babyface of Laface Records fame. Like Babyface, GT is capable of creating original songs that can serve the triple function of a morning starter, a dance and party track as well as a mid-tempo bed time song.
On its release, Ejika has generated positive responses from fans on social media. GT is a die-hard lyricist whose music has strength in its socio-cultural relevant. His vocal power sustained in "Ejika" invariably makes a mockery of other Nigerian artistes who leave their voices in their bedrooms and take their time bound "swagger" to stage.
