Slows Down Municipal Activities
“PLACING municipalities under administration does not help them in any way, instead it slows down municipal activities and leads to communities receiving poor service delivery,” said Honourable Inkosi Bonga Mdletshe, Shadow MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
The KwaZulu Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nomusa Dube has placed a number of Municipalities under administration, namely Mtubatuba, Imbabazane, OKhahlamba, Indaka, Msunduzi and uMhlabuyalingana, due to malfunctioning caused by either financial mismanagement or poor management.
The IFP has reviewed the MEC’s move to place municipalities under administration, and has noted that although some have been known to recover once they have been placed under administration most of these municipalities have not, or it has taken too long for them to recover.
“The MEC needs to find another strategy to help municipalities that are failing to cope with municipal operations. What is ironic is that the recent municipalities that have been placed under administration are municipalities that are under the ANC-NFP coalition which means that the problem might be in the leadership,” said Honourable Inkosi Mdletshe.
The IFP is calling for the MEC, who will allegedly on Tuesday also place Abaqulusi Municipality under administration after poor management of the Municipality by political heads, to allow the public to at least decide on municipal leadership if the present leadership is failing.
