Nigeria: Student Accused of Stealing Perfumes At Kubwa

A 23-year-old student has been arraigned before an Abuja Magistrate Court for stealing perfumes and some items worth N1.5m belonging to one Nwabueze Chinwendu.

Sadiq Abubakar of Durumi village was charged with house breaking and theft, offences contrary to Sections 358 and 288 of the Penal Code.

Police Prosecutor, Ephraim Lukas, told the court that the complainant had reported at the police station on October 2, 2012, that the accused and one Dankairo, now at large, broke into her apartment in Kubwa and made away with some items including boxes containing clothes, certificates, jewelries and perfumes worth N1.5m.

He said during police investigation, the accused was arrested wearing the complainant's husband clothes, adding that some other stolen items were recovered after thorough search.

When the charges were read to the accused, he pleaded not guilty and the prosecutor asked for a date for hearing.

Magistrate Kutigi Jubril granted him bail in the sum of N150,000 with two reasonable sureties in like sums.

The magistrate ruled that one of the sureties must be a civil servant not below Grade Level 06 and that they must both reside within the court's jurisdiction.

The case was adjourned to February 20 for hearing.
