South Africa: IFP Members Not Guilty

press release

The Inkatha Freedom Party in KwaZulu Natal has welcomed Pietermaritzburg High Court’s ruling where five of its members were found not guilty of shooting ANC members who had been celebrating their victory after the 2009 Elections in Esigqumeni area, KwaSwayimane, Pietermaritzburg.

Funinkosi Gumede, Mphathiseni Gumede, Demo Richard Gumede, Stofela Gumede and Busani Gumede were accused of shooting ANC members in 2009. The five men were declared innocent by the Pietermaritzburg High Court, today, due to poor evidence from the Witnesses. The ANC members were in a motorcade when one was shot and killed and seven left injured.

“Justice has been served and it has been proven that the IFP has never been involved in any acts of violence. We welcome the ruling and applaud those who had been investigating the case for their diligent work,” said Hon. Blessed Gwala, Leader of the Official Opposition and IFP National Chairperson.

The IFP condemns any act of violence and stands for unity amongst Political Parties.
