Nigeria: Farmers Group Hails FG Over Mobile Phones

Lagos — Farmers under the aegis of Leaders of Commodity Associations, have expressed support for the planned provision of mobile telephones to farmers by the Federal Government.

At a press briefing in Lagos, the summit convener, Pastor Segun Adewumi, who spoke on behalf the group, said the farmers are in support of the provision of mobile telephones because it will help to mobilise and monitor rural farmers.

The group, who expressed dismayed over the controversy that trailed government's announcement of the mobile phones project, said "We have been following the unfolding events. After the ministerial briefing two weeks ago in Abuja, we, farmers began to see the benefits of the mobile phone project beyond enabling communication between the government and the farmers.

"We saw a project that will ensure full consolidation and success for the various innovative agricultural programmes of the present regime. We have reasons to believe that they will ensure that the programme outlives the regime."
