Nigeria: Jonathan Not Signing Budget This Week - Okonjo-Iweala

Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has denied reports attributed to her that President Goodluck Jonathan would sign the 2013 budget appropriation into law this week.

Reports had quoted the minister as giving assurances that the budget which has been a subject of controversy between the national assembly and presidency would be sorted out this week.

A statement by the minister's spokesman, Mr Paul C Nwabuikwu said it was premature to suggest that the budget would be signed into law this week.

"Whereas discussions between the executive and the National Assembly are ongoing in a cordial atmosphere, it is not yet clear when they will be concluded as much work remains to be done," he said.

"Against this background, reports stating that the president will sign the budget this week are therefore not realistic."
