Somalia: Unidentified Gunmen Kill Police Reservist in Mandera

Unidentified gunmen killed a police reservist in Mandera near the Somali border on Tuesday (February 12th).

The officer was shot from behind minutes after coming out of a mosque at 6:30 am in the Bula Nguvu neighbourhood, North Eastern Province police chief Charlton Mureithi told Sabahi.

He said the officer, Yussuf Mohammed, 32, had concluded his routine night patrols and was heading home to rest after the prayers. The assailants took the slain officer's gun, but abandoned it about a kilometre from the crime scene and fled, he said.

The police reservists are part of the team enlisted to bolster security in response to threats from al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Shabaab militants.
