Ghana: Sunyani High School Students Donate Blood

Sunyani — Students of Sunyani Senior High School have responded positively to the cry of the Brong-Ahafo Regional Hospital's Blood Bank in Sunyani by donating 168 units of blood on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at the school's campus.

In all, a total of 117 boys and 51 girls took part in the exercise, which was engineered and sponsored by the Regional Blood Bank in partnership with "Save Blood Foundation" a non-governmental organization in Sunyani.

The Regional Blood Donation Organizer, Emmanuel Amin Mahama commended the students for helping stock the Regional Blood Bank with 168units of blood, saying though the quantity donated is remarkable, there is still more to do.

He, therefore, called on students to disabuse their minds that blood donation exercise was painful, and willingly donate blood to help save lives at the hospital.

Mr. Mahama also thanked authorities of the school and all who help in the organization for their support and called on all schools in the region to emulate the gesture of students of Sunyani Senior High School when they are called upon.

The Chief Executive of "Save Blood Foundation", Eric Yaw Amponsah who is a national blood volunteer used the occasion to outdoor the operations of the organization in the region which was started four years ago in Tamale.

According to Amponsah the youth of the country ought to inculcate in them the spirit of voluntarism. This must be seen as their civic responsibility which will make them good and selfless leaders in the future.

He called on students to visit the hospitals maternity, children and accident wards to observe how children and mothers are struggling to live because of scarcity of blood at the blood banks to appreciate the need to donate blood to save lives.

Amponsah disclosed that his foundation would help create awareness in all educational institutions in the region in other to stock the blood banks to avoid shortages, which when occurred, leads to avoidable deaths.
