Rwanda: Suspected Robber Shot Dead in Nyanza

POLICE in Nyanza district are investigating the circumstances under which a 28-year-old man was shot dead on Wednesday.

The man, identified as Munezero Ngayabarambirwa, was shot by a security guard on duty at the Energy, Water and Sanitation Authority (EWSA) branch in Nyanza.

He was allegedly killed while attempting to steal electric cables on the premises.

The incident occurred on Wednesday night shortly after 10pm, according to the Southern Region Police Spokesperson, Superintendent Hubert Gashagaza.

He said the guard has been arrested to help with investigations.

"We are still looking into how the incident happened, to see whether it is a case of self-defence," Gashagaza said, adding that the guard would be referred to court.

Gashagaza, who regretted the incident, said the priority should be avoiding deaths under all circumstances.

EWSA has in the past decried theft of electric cables that has been reported from across the country.
