Nigeria: Monarch Raises Alarm Over Return of Herdsmen

Calabar — Paramount ruler of Odukpani Local Government Council of Cross River State, retired Col. Asakara Ekanem, yesterday lamented that herdsmen have returned to Ntan Obu community, which is within his kingdom, and unleashed their cattle on farms and other unauthorized places.

He said the cattle were causing havoc to crops and other economic leaves and roots.

"The herdsmen have returned again this year with their cattle to graze on farmlands and are not ready to listen to anyone. This has again brought about renewed tension between them and the people," he said.

He said last year when they invaded the same community and it resulted in violence, he drew attention of the state government, and the herdsmen left.

"The attack of last year is still memorable. I have drawn attention of the government to the wanton destruction, but there has not been commensurate compensation. And many of my people have still not completely returned home after the attack," he said.
