Liberia: U.S. Gov't Donates Several New Vehicles to Lisgis

The Government of the United States of America (USA) through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) on Thursday, February 14, 2013 donated eight SUV vehicles to the Liberia Institute for Statistics and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS). The donation, which is under the USAID sponsored MEASURE Evaluation Demographic and Health Survey (DHS), is aimed at improving health data collection by increasing access to counties.

Under the MEASURE Evaluation DHS, USAID has supported LISGIS to implement the Liberia Demographic and Health Survey (LDHS). Speaking during the donation, USAID Mission Director, Madam Patricia Rader, said the donation costs the US government over US$400,000. According to her, the donation will complement the Government of Liberia (GoL) commitment through the national budget.

The eight vehicles will allow LISGIS to accommodate the size, scale and scope of the DHS, which covers all 15 counties in Liberia with one vehicle serving as roving vehicle.

The 2012-2013 DHS is designed to provide reliable and detailed information on socio-demographic characteristics, health and the level of HIV in Liberia. According to the USAID Mission Director, since the last DHS was conducted in 2007, many strides have been made to improve the health and well-being of Liberians.

She said the survey will help qualify those successes and shed light on the areas for improvement. She also said the vehicle will help implement other important surveys throughout the year, including the Household Income and Expenditure Survey.

For his part, LISGIS' Director-General, Dr. T. Edward Liberty, lauded the Government and People of the United States for their tireless effort in supporting the development agenda of Liberia, especially the works of LISGIS. He said this not the first time that the US government has helped LISGIS in implementing its works. Dr. Liberty added that the donated vehicles will be used for their intended purpose as LISGIS carries out its assigned duties.
