Zambia: Kachingwe Narrates How He Was Assaulted

EXPELLED MMD National Secretary, Richard Kachingwe yesterday narrated before court how MMD Die Hard youth wing coordinator Bowman Lusambo and Lusaka Province youth chairperson Watson Mtonga allegedly beat him and dragged him out of his office.

Major Kachingwe, 62, told Lusaka Chief Resident Magistrate Joshua Banda that Lusambo on the material day acted like a 'big' commander and instructed youths to beat and drag him out of the MMD secretariat.

He said he sustained injuries on his body and bled profusely on one of his toes.

He said on December 1, last year after receiving some information about MMD president Nevers Mumba, he decided to go to the MMD secretariat at number 11 Nyati close in Rhodes Park to write a letter invalidating his presidency.

He said after writing the letter and dispatching it, two other MMD national executive committee members, Brian Chituwo and Kabinga Pande came to the office and started discussing the matter.

Maj Kachingwe, who during his examination-in-chief maintained that he was still MMD national secretary, said he left the two MMD leaders and went to address the Press where he announced his decision to invalidate Dr Mumba's position.

He said Mtonga approached him in his office and told him that he was not happy about his decision to invalidate Dr Mumba's position as president of the MMD.

He said while he was in his office, he heard some noise from outside.

"Shortly after the Press conference, I heard a lot of noise and I looked through the window and from nowhere I saw a crowd of youths. I could hear them shouting alikuti, alikuti (where is he) and I sensed that something was wrong," Maj Kachingwe said.

He said a few minutes later the door to his office was pushed open and he saw Lusambo and grabbed him in a disgraceful manner.

"I was dressed in a truck suit your honour and they grabbed me and started punching me and later dragged me out of my office like a thief.

They punched me everywhere on my body and dragged me through the secretariat foyer, to the kitchen, outside and all hell broke loose," Maj Kachingwe said.

He said as he was trying to gain his balance, one of the journalists asked him whether he still stood with his decision to invalidate Dr Mumba and when he said yes, Lusambo and Mtonga instructed the youth to "hammer him."

He said that the matter was reported to the police and that he obtained he a medical report from Levy Mwanawasa General Hospital.

The matter has been adjourned to March 28 this year for continued trial.

Lusambo, 35, of house number 8240 Chamba Valley, Chiwele Maimisa, 44, of house number 10 Chilenje South and Scorpion Kadobi, 44, of house number 89 Lusaka West and Mtonga, are facing three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

It is alleged that on December 3, 2012, the four assaulted Maj Kachingwe, publicity secretary Tobias

Kafumukache and MMD sympathiser Gregory Chifire, occasioning them actual bodily harm.
