Egypt: New Mufti - I Have No Political Affiliations

Egypt's new Mufti Shawki Ibrahim Abdel-Kerim asserted that he has no political affiliations.

"I belong only to Egypt and Azhar," he said in statements to the Kuwaiti Al-Rai daily.

Dr. Sheikh Abdel-Kerim was elected in a secret vote on Monday by the Senior Scholars Authority under Al-Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed el-Tayyeb.

He is set to replace outgoing Mufti Ali Gomaa, who will retire in March at the age of 61.

His tenure was extended by one year in 2012 by the former ruling military council.
