A Rabat military court on Saturday (February 16th) night sentenced nine defendants in the Gdeim Izik case to life in prison for "violence against the security forces leading to deaths and the mutilation of corpses", MAP reported. Fourteen other Sahrawis tried in the same case received prison terms ranging from 20 to 30 years.
The case dates back to November 2010, when violent clashes erupted near Laâyoune.
Fighting began when Moroccan troops dismantled the Gdeim Izik tent camp, where more than 20,000 Sahrawis gathered to protest Morocco's social policy in Western Sahara.
