Nigeria: Railway Workers Go On Strike

Nigeria Railway Corporation workers on Monday embarked on a strike action to protest anomalies in their conditions of service.

Hundreds of intending travellers on the newly re-opened Kano-Lagos route were left stranded this morning in Kano following the action as staff locked up the station.

Daily Trust gathered that the staff are complaining about lack of promotion and an ongoing recruitment exercise for officers on Grade levels 7 to 13 while many existing qualified NRC staff have not been considered for the same positions.

They are also complaining that while the locomotives have all been insured, the drivers do no have a similar insurance policy covering them.
