An Accra circuit court has sentence a taxi driver to three years imprisonment in hard labour for stealing and fondling the breast of passenger on board his taxi.
The convict, Teiko Tackie, who was suppose to take the complainant to Sukula, a suburb of Accra, branched into a rough road with the explanation of buying a cigarette.
He thereafter parked under a tree and began fondling the breast of the complainant in the attempt to have sex with her, however, the complainant managed to escape to a nearby house.
The convict, realizing danger, hurriedly drove his car away with the complainant's bag containing her bible, two mobile phones, GH¢50 and other items still in the vehicle.
He was charged with indecent assault and stealing. He pleaded guilty to the first count and not guilty to the second count before the court presided over by Ms. Sedina Abgemeva.
He was therefore convicted on his own plea and sentenced to 18 months on count two and three years on count one as his witness failed to appear before the court on three adjourned dates.
Narrating the facts of the case to the court, the prosecutor, ASP Sarah Acquah, noted that on June 11, this year at about 12:30 hours, the complainant, who was returning from church, boarded the convict's vehicle with other passengers to Chorkor.
She said on reaching the area around the offices of Radio Gold, the complainant indicated that she wanted to alight at a spot but Teiko Tackie and the other passengers told her it was unsafe to get down at that spot.
The prosecution said Tackie told the complainant that he was going to Laterbiokoshie so she should wait and after alighting all the passengers, would send her home.
ASP Acquah said the complainant obliged and on their way back home, Tackie took a rough road and when the complainant quizzed him, he told her that he was going to buy cigarettes.
"After buying the cigarettes, Tackie drove to a dark place and started fondling the breast of the complainant and rubbing his hand over her thighs and attempted to have sex with her.
The complainant informed Tackie that she would prefer they had sex at the back seat of the car and as soon as she got up she started shouting for help" the prosecutor told the court.
Tackie initially attempted chasing her, but realized that he would be apprehended so, he sped off in his car.
According to her, the complainant was rescued by neighbours, and reported the case to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) police at Mamprobi.
ASP Acquah said the complainant spotted Tackie at Danquah Circle, Osu and alerted the police at Maamobi and he was arrested, adding that when Tackie's room was searched the complainant's bag was found and later Tackie's sister produced the two mobile phones.
